We have all had that one dog. Maybe it was your first one, maybe it is the one you have now. For me, it was a scrawny little Labrador puppy that I fell in love with while working overnights at a veterinary emergency center. The day practice took care of “pet store puppies” when that was still a thing. The dogs would come to the practice sick, and we would care for them overnights. They would be picked up to go back to the pet store within 1-3 days.
He was on oxygen, as he had a horrible time breathing due to pneumonia. His head would hang down in defeat. I would have to wipe his nose constantly and give him all his medication and thump his chest during his breathing treatments.
He was so small at 4 months, and very thin because he could not smell his food, so did not want to eat. I brought chicken and steak bits in to tempt him and he would look at me with these huge eyes. All I wanted was for this dog to be happy and healthy.
His head looked like a bean, so I called him my little bean and he would wag his tail whenever I came on shift at 8pm. Then, as we all do, I started giving him nicknames. Beanster, Beanstalk, etc. I remembered a day long past when I saw the yellowest Labrador ever on Cape Cod. I said to myself, if I ever get a yellow lab, I will call him Butter. So, he became Butterbean. My Butterbean.
